The year 2020 (and 2021) is impacting all of us, and the desire to escape and travel seems to be mounting by the week. Personally, I’m miserable by the outlook of staring at a screen for days, weeks, looking at the same four walls, looking forward to my morning coffee and the occasional restaurant outing or weekend with friends.

And nothing compares to the feeling of picturing myself boarding a plane, window seat, traveling across the ocean, landing somewhere foreign and welcoming. The headlines reading “vaccinated travelers welcome”, “country opening to travelers summer 2021” and “airlines getting back to normal flight schedules” are music to my ears!

So, what can you do now to prepare for future travel? Do these 5 things today to prepare:

  1. Get the vaccine when it’s available to you - if you don’t your travel options will be limited

  2. Set aside airfare spending dollars - while hotels and day to day travel expenses like meals, activities, and local transportation are eager to welcome back traveler, expect plane tickets to increase - and stay high. Also, if you aren’t getting at least 2x points on travel with your credit card, it’s time to look into a credit card to help you. We recommend the points guy who breaks down options across all the major credit cards

  3. Find your passport and check the expiration - time to dust it off and if it’s set to expire in the next 6-12 months, you might want to go ahead and renew. I just renewed mine with priority and it only took a few weeks to get it back

  4. Get the travel insurance when booking travel. While we’re very optimistic of a travel restart, we recommend securing travel insurance to protect against possible changes in covid cases/strains in countries around the world. We’ve all seen how quickly a country’s rules can change, so it’s smart to be protected

  5. Lastly, be thoughtful about where you travel. Now more than ever, it’s important we protect and support developing countries who are still in the midst of a pandemic - you can do this by choosing to travel to developed countries instead, ensuring you are vaccinated, and donating to the local charities.

The future of travel is bright! Now we just need to get ourselves ready to get back out there and explore our freaking beautiful planet.
